Life is what happens to me while I am making other plans. Wait! Back up. No. It's not. Life is what happens to me with each and every decision I make every moment of every day. I'm not talking about the genetic lottery we were all tossed into, the parents we received, or any crimes acted against us. My mother was the only white girl in "da hood" or the ghetto as it was called in her day; born to an abusive schizophrenic prostitute. She grew into a strong willed, dominate, moralist woman that loved me to no end. Every choice she ever made brought her further from her bleak beginnings. She was also an outstanding nurse, choosing to care for our elders. She came to make other decisions that cut her life short. She lost in the genetic lottery, having a genetic marker, that is thankfully far kinder to me than it was to her. That "happened to her." The smoking for 40 years, living on a diet of carbs and fried food did not add to her health or longevity, but were part of her daily decisions. Good, bad, right or wrong is not really for me to say. Maybe, with the constant betrayal of her own body, she felt these decisions brought her comfort.
Weighing over 200 lbs at 5'2 was a result of my choices. Yes, I do fight genetics, but I am not a slave to them. My current healthier weight and life style is also a choice. Sometimes it is a hard choice, and sometimes I choose to eat chips and salsa while I write this blog. Sometimes I don't. But they sure were good today!
When I stop thinking "Life happens to me" and begin thinking "I Make Life Happen" my world becomes a happier place, and I become a stronger more joyful person. Is there a choice you can make today that will help you Make Life Happen?
